The ACT has had plans to shift to a computer-based testing format for years. For the 2018-2019 school year, all international tests will be administered via computer for security reasons. Some school districts in the United States that require all students to take the ACT have also switched to the computer-based format as a sort of pilot program.
ACT has released no official word on when the switch will sweep across America, but we will be keeping an eye on this trend in the coming months and years. For now, logistics still dictate that American students take the test with pencil and paper.
